Bob began playing the cornet under the tutelage of Pat Sullivan at Ordean junior high, then under Bill Tormondson at Duluth East H.S. Encouraged by his initial experience he continued to play the trumpet, eventually obtaining bachelors degrees in music education and trumpet performance at UMD. As a UMD student he played with the DSSO, the Hungry Five Society, George Hitt and the Grandma’s Big Band, Joe Czerniak and the Polka Dots, and any other group or event that paid or had free beer. He joined the Air Force Band program, playing in the Air Force Band of the Golden Gate and the Air Force Academy Band. Other endeavors then predominated for a period of time, but Bob continued to keep the trumpet simmering, and managed to play with the Stan Mark Big Band, the Dick King Swing Band, the Grand Forks Symphony, the Fargo Jazz Arts Group and a few other obscure collections. Since returning to Duluth, Bob has reconnected with many of his long-time musician friends and many new ones. Along the way he’s had the opportunity to record with, play with, or back up Bobby Shew, Rufus Reid, Steve Houghton, Bill Watrous, Bob Minzer, Prudence Johnson, Connie Evenson, Kevin Mahogany, Wayne Newton, Bobby Vinton, the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, and others. Bob practices hospital-based Internal Medicine at St. Mary’s Medical Center.
